Mulay Plastics Inc. is investing more than $8 million to start up its newest custom injection molding facility in Forest City, Ark., primarily to serve Sanyo Manufacturing Corp. of America. Sanyo invited Addison, Ill.-based Mulay to locate in Forest City after entering into a long-term agreement for Mulay to supply all of Sanyo's molding requirements. Mulay said it expects the facility to be operational by May 1.
Mulay is leasing a 90,000-square-foot building on Sanyo's business campus in Forest City. Mulay Plastics President Doug Mulay said that initially the plant will house seven or eight injection molding machines with clamping forces of 1,000 tons and up. More presses will be added as Sanyo's business growth dictates. Mulay expects to hire 80-90 people at the plant.
The facility also will offer full finishing capabilities and assembly with state-of-the-art equipment. Support in areas such as mold-making and engineering services will come from Mulay'sHolly Springs, Miss., plant, about 80 miles from Forest City.
In other news, Mulay's Holly Springs plant is expanding to add molding capabilities and to modify the finishing line. The additions will boost the facility's manufacturing capacity by 40 percent.
Mulay also has plants in Addison; Casa Grande, Ariz.; and in Tijuana, Mexico. It built the Mexican plant last year to serve the consumer electronics industry there.
Besides consumer electronics, Mulay serves the computer and peripheral, and business equipment industries, and employs about 1,000 companywide.
