Plastics recycling has come of age, as evidenced by state-of-the-art machinery in use at the Garten Foundation, a plastics recovery facility in Salem, Ore. Set up in 1994 as a demonstration project in conjunction with the American Plastics Council, the nonprofit operation has been using a sophisticated automated sorting system to separate waste bottles for recycling.
