CHICAGO - An 8-year-old Minnesota girl came up with the idea for the Makin Bacon dish, touted as a better way to microwave bacon. On Feb. 6, a patent was issued with her name on it: Abbey Fleck, now 12 years old. Two more patents are pending.
A de F Ltd., a St. Paul, Minn., company started by her father Jon Fleck, demonstrated Makin Bacon at the International Housewares Show held in Chicago.
The dish is fitted with hangers, shaped like goal posts so the bacon stays above the fat. The dish is injection molded from polymethyl pentene, a material that withstands hot bacon fat. Fleck declined to identify the molder.
Abbey Fleck got the idea while watching her father make breakfast. When he ran out of paper towels, she suggested that cooking bacon would be less messy if the strips hung while they cooked.
