A Palm Springs, Calif., maker of plastic patio furniture is building a warehouse to make way for new injection molded products at its 184,000-square-foot plant and showroom. The 100,000-square-foot warehouse will allow McLane Leisure Products Inc. to add molding capacity at its plant for several new proprietary products, including a patio chaise and a new style of table, according to President Ron McLane.
When the warehouse is completed next year, the company initially will expand by two injection molding machines, with clamping forces of 850 tons or larger, and 20 workers, he said recently by telephone.
The Palm Springs plant currently houses 14 Taiwanese presses and three extruders, and employs 70, he said.
McLane said the firm will invest roughly $4 million in the project.
The firm injection molds polypropylene table tops and chairs, and extrudes table legs, according to McLane. Home-improvement and warehouse stores, such as Home Depot Inc., are the firm's main customers, he said.
Last year, sales totaled about $3 million.
Frank McLane, 81, who owns the 7-year-old operation, also co-owns a company in Paramount with his brother Jim, called McLane Manufacturing Inc.
That company makes a proprietary line of battery- and gas-powered lawn mowers and edgers. The outfit makes some plastic parts, such as grass catchers, and has been manufacturing for 50 years, McLane said.
