As of today, this weekly, ink-and-paper version of Plastics News now has a thoroughly modern, electronic sibling. Meet our newest family member - Plastics News On the Web. You will notice a distinct resemblance between the two, with their colorful, easy-to-use formats and their missions to deliver hard news and in-depth information about the business of the increasingly international plastics industry. They just go about it in different, yet complementary ways.
Plastics News On the Web offers the ability to deliver breaking news within minutes to readers/viewers in any corner of the globe who have online access. It also affords a degree of computerized search capabilities and user interactivity that multiplies the value of directory-style lists and content-rich databases such as our six exclusive processor rankings.
In addition, the technology allows us to make directly available to you for the first time our full-text story archives and our historical resin pricing data, both of which offer search engines to help you quickly pinpoint the exact information you need.
When Crain Communications Inc. launched Plastics News in March 1989, some wondered how we would find enough worthwhile news to fill a 24-page newspaper every week. Well, we now average 38 pages each week, and even that is seldom enough to handle the overflow of news and information generated by 25 editorial staffers and correspondents.
That same staff of professional newsgatherers - most of whom spring from daily newspaper and newswire backgrounds - now will have an outlet for those breaking news stories that are just too important to wait for next Monday's issue.
Plastics News On the Web will deliver today's news today, and provide online updates to key stories as they unfold through the week.
Our online edition will not simply mirror what appears in the newspaper. While some sections (such as Marketplace and our Viewpoint page) will be similar in both versions, it also will include breaking news and updated versions of stories that already appeared in the print edition.
Our Web site also will include daily updates to the 80-company PN Stock Index, plus direct links to other key industry sites around the Internet.
Our objective is to merge the strengths of both mediums to reinforce Plastics News' position as the dominant source of plastics industry news and key market and financial data.
But our Web site doesn't stop there. We have put together a package offering options of online banner ads, full-screen ads and hypertext links to companies' existing home pages - options that offer exciting opportunities to plastics processors, as well as to supplier companies.
The Classifieds page on our Web site, meanwhile, represents an extension of by far the largest classified section in the market, and an opportunity now to reach a global audience.
Full access to our site will be available for free to all visitors for a limited period of time. After that, while much information will remain free, some of the more in-depth data will be restricted to paid subscribers of the weekly newspaper.
Come join us on our exciting adventure in cyberspace, and let us know what you think.
