AKRON, OHIO - With styrene monomer and vinyl chloride monomer prices continuing to rise slightly, polystyrene and PVC resin suppliers apparently are pushing for additional price increases. Buyers said last week their PS and PVC suppliers have announced additional price increases of 4 cents per pound, but executives for resin producing firms could not be reached for confirmation.
PVC producers are raising prices by 2 cents a pound May 1, and by 2 cents June 1, buyers said. These increases come after the producers raised prices by 4 cents earlier this year. Prices for PVC would increase a total of 8 cents per pound in the first half of this year if the price changes take effect in the market. Mean-while, buyers said PS makers announced they would boost prices by 4 cents.
Dow Chemical Co. confirmed it made an announcement, but other PS producers could not be reached for comment. Dow tried to raise PS prices in mid-May, but delayed its until June 1 when other producers announced increases effective for that date.
PS suppliers raised prices by 2 cents earlier this year, after attempting to get a 4-cent hike.
