Owens Corning has purchased its third foamed polystyrene insulation maker in as many years by acquiring a unit of England's Linpac Plastics Ltd. The firm bought Linpac Insula-tion Products, which will be renamed Owens Corning Poly-Foam. Linpac makes extruded PS foam. Terms were not disclosed.
Linpac Insulation already was licensing manufacturing technology from UC Industries, a Parsippany, N.J., manufacturer of Foamular-brand expanded PS insulation acquired by Owens Corning in 1994. The next year Owens Corning acquired an extruded PS insulation maker, Falcon Manufacturing of Michigan Inc., based in Byron Center, Mich.
Under the patented UC pro-cess, the foam is extruded under a partial vacuum. The firm claims the process makes insulation board in a range of densities and improves control over thermal and mechanical properties.
Linpac Insulation employs 164 at its headquarters plant in Hartlepool, England, and another facility in Barcelona, Spain. It has sales offices in Italy and Holland.
Linpac Plastics of Knottingley, England, wants to focus on its core packaging business, said Mike Anderson, managing director. Linpac acquired the foamed insulation business 10 years ago.
Owens Corning already supplies glass and rock wool insulation products to Europe.
``This latest development also takes Owens Corning into countries where we are not yet so well-established, such as Spain, Portugal and Italy,'' said Warren Knowlton, Owens Corning's president of Building Materials Europe.
