PVC compounder Hoffman Plastic Compounds Inc. will increase its annual resin processing capacity to more than 68 million pounds with an additional extruder. Hoffman Plastic Compounds employs 50, and manufactures rigid and flexible compounds of PVC virgin vinyl in pellet or powder form. It generated 1995 sales of $24.9 million, said Roland Hoffman, vice president and operations manager of the Southern California firm.
``We think sales will increase about 10 percent this year'' with the additional equipment, he said. Hoffman ships compounds to production sites worldwide, including Asia and Europe.
A second plant, which Hoffman acquired in South El Monte in January, is expanding. A Littleford automated, high-intensity mixing system and a Cincinnati Milacron Inc. twin-screw extruder operate in the 23,000-square-foot facility; another Milacron extruder scheduled to be operational in July will increase the plant's annual capacity to 14.2 million pounds.
The 40,000-square-foot facility, about 10 miles from the Para-mount site of Hoffman's headquarters and first plant, has an annual capacity of 54 million pounds. It uses seven single-screw extruders for flexible PVC lines and two Cincinnati Milacron CM80HP twin-screw extruders, installed in 1991 and 1994, for rigid PVC lines. The manager's father, Ronald Hoffman, founded the firm in 1970. He remains owner and president.
A sister company, R&S Manu-facturing & Supply Inc., posted record sales in May in custom-compounding color concentrates, said R&S sales representative Sheryl Hoffman-Kaitz.
R&S uses a color spectrophotometer to achieve repeatable color matches of concentrates and dry blends for use with thermoplastics. R&S employs 20 and generates annual sales of about $2.5 million. It concentrates on the western United States. R&S was established in 1976 as in-house color supplier to Hoffman Plastic Compounds and began pursuing other customers.
Another sister company, PVC recycler Ronford Products Inc., operates four single-screw extruder lines, five grinding lines and two PVC reclamation systems. Ronford was formed in 1974, employs 35 and generates sales of about $5 million, said Carl Higgins, plant manager.
R&S and Ronford share a Pomona building. R&S occupies 15,000 square feet, and Ronford, 45,000 square feet.
