Shell technology blends PEN, PET
Shell Chemical Co. says its HiPertuf blending technology allows cost-effective use of polyethylene naphthalate for high-temperature-resistant barrier packaging.
The Houston firm is offering developmental quantities of HiPertuf polyester, a blend of PEN with PET. It is conducting commercial tests, including container applications to replace metal and glass. Shell said applications for the blend probably will require new designs and tooling for optimal performance and economics.
The firm makes PEN, PET and HiPertuf polyester blends at Point Pleasant, W.Va., and markets them from its polyester business unit in Akron, Ohio.
