Custom molder Plastic Prod-ucts Co. Inc., based in Lindstrom, Minn., announced the opening last month of an injection molding plant in Oklahoma City, and plans to open a second plant in Kentucky. The cost of the facilities was undisclosed.
Rick Carlson, general manager for Plastic Products, said the company purchased a defunct plastics business in Oklahoma City that included an 18,000-square-foot building and four presses with 250-550 tons of clamping force. Oklahoma City represents a new market for the company.
``We've got some customers in that general area, so we'll be transferring that work from our other plants to that one and grow the business there,'' Carlson said.
The Oklahoma facility has mold maintenance and repair capabilities as well as secondary operations such as sonic welding, hot stamping, pad printing and light assembly.
Plastic Products is finishing off a new, 40,000-square-foot building in Greenville, Ky. This will be the company's second Kentucky plant and will serve customers primarily in the appliance industry in that region. A plant in Lebanon, Ky., and another facility in Greenfield, Tenn., also serve the appliance industry.
Carlson said the new plant in Greenville, which will open this fall, can be expanded to 70,000 square feet. It initially will house eight to 10 molding presses with 200-700 tons of clamping force. Carlson said he expects to employ 50 by the end of the first year, expanding that to 100 by the end of year two. That facility also will have mold maintenance and repair capabilities, and a variety of secondary operations.
Carlson said the state of Ken-tucky provided financial incentives and tax abatements to entice the company to put another plant there.
``They have tremendous incentives for people to do business there,'' Carlson said. ``Better than any place we've looked at.''
Besides the appliance industry, Plastic Products, headed by Pres-ident Marlene Messin, serves the consumer goods, electronics and industrial products industries.
Companywide, Plastic Prod-ucts has about 150 molding presses offering gas-assist and insert molding, and employs 600. Four facilities are ISO-9002 certified.
