AKRON, OHIO-Royal Dutch/Shell announced Aug. 4 it is seeking a partnership with a maker of purified terephthalic acid. PTA is used exclusively for the production of PET fibers and resins, and Shell, one of the largest producers of PET in the world, does not make PTA.
The company said it is negotiating with several makers of PTA, and that it expects to conclude a deal within nine months.
The largest makers of PTA in the world include Amoco Chemical Co. of Alpharetta, Ga.; Hoechst AG of Frankfurt, Germany; and ICI of London.
Bob Lee, marketing and sales manager for Shell's PET resins business in Akron, confirmed Aug. 6 that Shell may take such a step as an effort to strengthen its competitive position.
