PIEDMONT, S.C.-Interfilms Holdings Inc. recently purchased Robert Williams Inc. from Flexel Inc. Terms were not disclosed.
RWI converts and distributes a range of plastic films, with an emphasis on the window envelope and folding carton markets. It is one of two national distributors of polystyrene film manufactured by Dow Chemical Co. of Midland, Mich.
RWI has plants in Glastonbury, Conn., and Lemont, Ill., and a network of warehouses throughout the United States.
Flexel, an Atlanta-based manufacturer of cellophane, sold RWI to generate capital and to pursue strategies related to its primary line of business, according to the company.
Flexel had owned RWI since 1988.
Interfilms is a Piedmont converter and distributor of plastic films and other substrates, with an emphasis on polyester film.
HOUSTON - Gundle/SLT Environmental Inc. (GSE) has established a 50-50 joint venture with a major Egyptian supplier of plastic liners, bags and foam products.
The venture with Hyma Plastics/Hyma Foam will make geo-membrane products for the Egyptian market, concentrating on water and waste-water applications.
Hyma/GSE Lining Technology Co. has the capacity to extrude 20 million pounds annually.
GSE's investment was about $3 million.
The formation of the venture continues a trend at Houston-based GSE toward establishing regional manufacturing organizations without adding new capacity into the market, said Bill Reid, president and chief executive officer.
HOUSTON-Vinmar International Ltd. and Flex Industries Ltd. have set up a joint venture to market PET and biaxially oriented poly-propylene films, which are used in metalizing, packaging, foil stamping and post-lamination applications.
The new company, Flexvin Ltd., is based in Houston, and also will have facilities in the Midwest and on the East Coast.
The two parent firms created Flexvin to set up warehousing and slitting facilities that would increase volume substantially and cater to market segments that cannot plan procurement schedules months in advance.
Vinmar, based in Houston, markets petrochemicals, plastic resins and plastic films. The company has sold polyester film in the United States for about seven years.
Flex Industries manufactures PET and BOPP film in India.
It currently has capacity to make 55 million pounds of PET film and 33 million pounds of BOPP, and has plans to boost capacity to 90 million pounds and 66 million pounds, respectively, by 1997.

The dividend will be payable Oct. 15 to shareholders of record at the close of business Sept. 25.
Uniflex, headquartered in Hicksville, designs, manufactures and markets a line of specialty plastic bags used for packaging, sales and advertising promotions, including general retail. The publicly held company also manufactures medical products and tamper-evident cash- or document-handling envelopes.
The stock split will increase liquidity and broaden the company's shareholder base, according to Robert K. Semel, president and chief operating officer.
