Known for its medical products manufacturing, DeRoyal Plastics Group has continued to boost injection and blow molding capacity as it takes on new markets. Last month, DeRoyal business unit Royal Precision Plastics Inc. started up its fourth extrusion blow molding machine in Powell, Tenn. The company will use the Sterling 20-pound, dual-head machine - an investment of about $1.2 million - mainly for new business in consumer products and durable goods, said David Power, head of sales and marketing.
``It's positioning us for additional growth too,'' he said.
That growth will come from DeRoyal's push into its newest markets, which include telecommunications and children's products, as well as from its longtime medical domain.
Proprietary plastic medical products make up 20 percent of DeRoyal's plastics sales - roughly $21 million in 1995. About $16 million of that total came from injection molded products. Power would not disclose blow molding sales. Plastic bags were the group's only other plastic products, but film extrusion and bag-making capacity are being phased out at Powell.
Royal Precision has three Powell plants - two dedicated to injection molding, and a third, 80,000-square-foot facility split between blow molding and injection molding operations, Power said.
®¯DeRoyal entered blow molding two years ago with a single Battenfeld-Hartig extrusion machine to make a 40-gallon, proprietary infectious-waste container. Since then the company has been committed to becoming a multi-process house, so it can manufacture assemblies containing both injection and blow molded parts, he said. About 57 people now work in the blow molding division, he said.
Last year Royal Precision added two Sterling extrusion blow molding machines with two 15-pound accumulator heads apiece, when it took on such telecommunications products as weather-protective polyethylene closures for power lines and power drops. The company also blow molds a high density PE bed for children, and works with polystyrene and ABS. Power would not discuss any new products or disclose customers.
DeRoyal Plastics is an umbrella for parent DeRoyal Industries Inc.'s three plastics concerns: Royal Precision, and injection molders Critical Disposables Inc. of Sanford, Fla., and Hospital Disposables Inc. of Portland, Tenn. Together those companies operate 24 presses and employ 140.
DeRoyal Industries, also based in Powell, is a manufacturer and distributor of medical supplies worldwide.
