In this issue, prominently featured on Page 1 as Plastics News' Processor of the Year, is a usually low-profile company observing its 50th anniversary in 1996. Bryan Custom Plastics, the Bryan, Ohio-based division of United Screw and Bolt Corp. of North Olmsted, Ohio, has a lot to celebrate. In 1995, Bryan was responsible for $96 million of its parent's $119 million in sales. It also received Ford Motor Co.'s Total Quality Excellence Award. The TQE is the supreme distinction a Ford full-service supplier can receive, representing excellence and continued improvement in product quality, customer satisfaction, engineering expertise, delivery and commercial performance.
Bryan has distinguished itself in other areas as well, which is why the company was chosen from a select group of five finalists to receive this publication's highest award.
The nominees were reviewed by PN's editorial board on performance during the past five years in financial and quality results, customer/employee relations, environmental record and public service. Judged the top-scoring company, Bryan has demonstrated a record of excellence in every category, from earnings and sales to many high-quality employee and public-service programs.
Besides Ford, Bryan supplies custom injection molded parts for Nissan, Honda, Saturn, General Motors and Subaru. Its community presence includes a neighborhood park Bryan created behind its plant and maintains in cooperation with the city.
The business provides financial aid to more than 50 local organizations. Workers, known as ``associates'' at Bryan, help plan company events and programs. A 24-hour-a-day fitness center is maintained for them, with aerobics instruction and personal training provided at designated times. Last year, Bryan funded more than 750 hours of employee training per month in programs ranging from conversational Spanish to injection molding.
Betty Siders, vice president of the employees' labor group, United Paperworkers International Union, Local 7141, calls Bryan a ``really outstanding'' company. That is an apt description of our 1996 Processor of the Year.
