Stratford, Ontario-Samsonite Canada Inc. will keep its customer injection molding operation while its parent restructures. Samsonite Canada runs a molding shop in Stratford, Ontario, for automotive, electronic and other industries. Fred Judge, the firm's vice president of finance, said the molding operation ''is rapidly growing and the company will place a greater emphasis on manufacturing plastic parts.'' It expects the molding business to achieve ISO 9002 and QS9000 certifications by the end of the first quarter next year. Samsonite Corp. of Denver announced Oct. 31 it will consolidate North American luggage production in Denver within a year. That and other restructuring moves will cut as many as 450 jobs worldwide and save Samsonite a bout $12.7 million per year before tax.
Judge said the Canadian subsidiary will stop luggage assembly at Stratford, but will continue to distribute Samsonite products. Samsonite officials could not be reached to confirm a Denver Post article that said the company's Mexico operations will move luggage production to Denver. The Denver Post also said Samsonite is working on new, lightweight luggage ''made by injecting a harmless, inert gas between two thin layers of plastic.''
