Five years ago this week in Plastics News: Jon M. Huntsman was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Doctors successfully treated the Huntsman Chemical Corp. chairman in early 1992. Chemotherapy for mouth cancer in 1993 also was successful.
Pawnee Industries lost a $20 million damages suit against Spartech Corp., which in 1988 hired nearly 20 employees from Impact Extrusions after Pawnee bought Impact.
Two market studies separately predicted plastics recycling would reach 2.8 billion pounds of polyethylene in the United States and 6.2 billion pounds for all thermoplastics in North America by 2000. (The American Plastics Council estimated about 1.2 billion pounds of U.S. bottles and containers were recycled in 1995.)
