Alpha/Owens Corning showed a new hybrid polyester/vinyl ester resin for sheet molding compound.
The company in Collierville, Tenn., said the E-8000 resins perform like vinyl ester but thicken chemically with polyester's ease and consistency.
Alpha/Owens Corning said the resins are designed for SMC parts that require higher mechanical properties even when exposed to hot or corrosive environments. Likely automotive applications include radiator supports, cross-vehicle beams, windshield wiper cowl plenums, heat shields for fuel tanks and valve covers.
Alpha/Owens Corning also showed the first of a new series of flame-retardant resins, an unsaturated polyester called K299FR bisphenol-A.
The resin can be used for filament winding and hand lay-up. One early user of the resin is Universal Fan & Blower Ltd., a maker of fan housings and wheel assemblies for highly corrosive industries.
Alpha/Owens Corning is co-owned by Alpha Corp. of Collierville and Owens Corning of Toledo, Ohio.
