WASHINGTON—Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Carol Browner on April 22 signed a final rule expanding Toxic Release Inventory reporting requirements to include chemical wholesalers, industry officials said.
President Clinton announced on Earth Day that seven industrial sectors, including metal and coal mining, electric utilities and petroleum bulk terminals, will be added to industries already required to report the chemicals they release into the environment.
The addition of chemical wholesalers will ``add a few more'' plastic firms, but most already were covered under earlier TRI rules, said Maureen Healey, director of federal environment and transportation issues for Society of the Plastics Industry Inc. in Washington.
She said April 23 that chemical wholesalers include businesses in Standard Industrial Classification code 5169. Detail rules could be released next week.
The Environmental Protection Agency is considering a separate expansion of what must be reported under TRI. That ruling is not expected until early next year.
