BASF plans Mexican styrenics operation
ALTAMIRA, MEXICO—BASF Mexicana SA de CV of Mexico City started construction on a plant In Altamira that will supply specialty styrenic copolymers to the Americas.
The plant will have a production capacity of 286.6 million pounds per year. Production of Luran acrylic styrene acrylonitrile, Terluran ABS and Luran styrene acrylonitrile extrusion and molding resins is scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 1998. A spokeswoman for the company would not disclose the cost of the plant.
Luran ASA applications include those requiring color stability in both indoor and outdoor conditions, such as recreational vehicles, boats, and satellite dishes.
Terluran ABS' major applications include appliances, pipe, luggage, leisure products and packaging. Applications of Luran SAN include: covers to sound equipment, medical components, cups, utensils, toothbrushes, lipstick cases and other cosmetic goods.
Colorite gives vinyl for low-cost housing
BURLINGTON, N.J.—Colorite Polymers' Specialty Vinyl Resins, working with D.C. Habitat for Humanity, helped make affordable housing a reality.
The company provided building products for 34 new townhomes built in southeast Washington in April.
The Burlington-based company provided all the vinyl construction products, such as vinyl siding, flooring and electrical boxes, needed to complete the project, called the ``Home Stretch'' development.
During construction, the vinyl industry members also coordinated a recycling project to recover vinyl for second-generation products such as Christmas trees or cooling tower fill.
Borden proposes plan to convert ownership
COLUMBUS, OHIO—BCP Management Inc., the general partner of Borden Chemicals and Plastics LP, plans to convert existing ownership interests in the partnership into shares of a newly formed corporation, as yet unnamed.
A proposed conversion plan entitles shareholders to exchange their existing ownership interests in the partnership for shares of common stock in the new corporation.
Borden Chemicals and Plastics of Columbus will continue to operate as it is now until a conversion plan is approved.
OxyChem Sumitomo expand joint venture
DALLAS—Occidental Chemical Corp. and Sumitomo Bakelite Co. Ltd. have expanded their joint-venture phenolic molding compound activities to supply the European market.
Under this arrangement, Dallas-based OxyChem's international sales division will supply European markets with glass-filled molding compounds for automotive and electrical markets produced at the Fort Erie, Ontario, facility.
With plants in Southeast Asia, Sumitomo Bakelite manufactures a variety of plastics for the electronics, automotive, health-care and other industries.
Machine firm Alloyd to buy Callahan Co.
DEKALB, ILL.—Alloyd Co., a manufacturer of packaging machinery, plans to acquire Callanan Co. this month.
Callanan of Elk Grove Village, Ill., manufactures RF Sealing Systems for the medical, automotive, and packaging industries. The acquisition is expected to expand Alloyd's machinery line, as well as its presence in the medical and auto industries, Alloyd said in a news release.
Alloyd is based in DeKalb, and said its annual sales are about $70 million. The company also does light-gauge, custom thermoforming of retail packaging. There are no management changes planned.
