A Massachusetts color concentrate producer has established a new southern California facility that is being expanded immediately.
``Customer reception is so good that we took over the rest of the building,'' Wayne Prescott, vice president of sales and marketing for Color Technology Inc., said in a telephone interview.
The new site, Color Technology West in Chula Vista, Calif., committed initially for 20,000 square feet in a light industrial park and has added a contiguous 10,000 square feet to meet needs for production, color matching and service for processors in the thermoplastics industry.
Steve Kaufman founded Color Technology Inc. in 1975 and continues as president and chief executive officer.
``With Color Technology West, we are closer and better able to meet the critical color service needs of our Southwestern customers,'' he said in a statement.
The new facility employs 25 and is equipped with two Henschel high-intensity, 500-pound-per-batch mixing lines and two Hobart batch-type mixing lines, two Prodex single-screw extruders and three small Boy injection molding machines. Also, the site has a color-matching lab with testing and analytical equipment.
After NPE closes in June, American Leistritz will ship a demonstrator 60-millimeter, twin-screw extruder to Chula Vista.
At its 35,000-square-foot facility in Westboro, Mass., Color Technology operates a Leistritz extruder that it had planned to relocate to California. Business volume increased, however, and the firm could not afford to idle the extruder. A second Leistritz will reach Chula Vista eventually.
``We plan to expand our business in the electronics and medical markets,'' Prescott said.
The base includes cosmetics, personal care, chemicals packaging, medical devices, toys, recreational products, architectural and industrial. Current customers include Hasbro Inc., Gillette Co., Plastek Industries Inc. and Hancor Inc.
Color Technology West added John Szary as a technical salesman April 21 to cover operations on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border between San Diego and El Paso, Texas.
The company also is adding a salesman in Los Angeles-Orange County and a manufacturer's representative in Portland, Ore., to handle San Francisco and the Northwest, Prescott said.
