CHICAGO — NPE is coming, and Chicago will be busting at the seams.
With average attendance at a Chicago trade show of only about 12,000, the 75,000 people expected to show up will put a strain on the supply of rooms.
With a mere 65,000 hotel rooms available in the city, 8,000 people already are on a waiting list for lodging.
The Chicago area has only 152 hotels, according to the Chicago Convention and Tourism Bureau Inc.
This throng of NPE show-goers will make up some 3.8 percent of all trade-show attendees, and 1.9 percent of all people who visit Chicago on business in a given year.
The mid-June trade show is expected to bring in about $17 million, according to the tourism bureau.
If you do manage to book a room, beware: There is a 14.9 percent tax on hotel rooms in Chicago.
