NPE 1997 impressive international bazaar Amid the hundreds of formal conferences, presentations and meetings this week, an estimated 75,000-80,000 people associated with the plastics industry will directly take in NPE 1997.
The triennial event is a major-league exposition, worth about $17 million to Chicago, according to the city's convention and tourism bureau.
The real measure of this year's massive exhibition won't be fully known for years, however. That's because amid the strutting of equipment and boasting of services, the business and social networking taking place requires time to germinate and blossom.
In some cases, deals will be struck fairly quickly. The seed for others will be planted with the simple exchange of a business card — often between individuals living in different parts of the world.
The triumph of NPE as a commercial venture is based more on history than plastics, ironically. The free form of commerce on display has its roots in the decline of feudalism and the rise of mercantilism centuries ago. That will not be a topic of discussion at the various hospitality suites or Chicago restaurants hosting attendees, but it is part of the background of what is an impressive global bazaar.
