CHICAGO — For Demaplast SA de CV, the road to new markets in Latin America and other developing regions of the world led through Chicago during NPE 1997.
The Mexico City-based maker of stretch blow molding machinery made its first visit to NPE this year and collected ``very good'' contacts for potential sales, said Jose Lopez, general manager.
Demaplast makes a small, low-cost machine that is used on short production runs. NPE attendees from Latin America, Asia, Africa, Eastern Europe and Russia showed strong interest in the machine, he said.
At the same time, Demaplast is benefiting from a recovering Mexican economy. Last year, the company built and sold seven machines, mostly for export. Already this year, Demaplast has sold six and expects to sell a total of 21, Lopez said. He credits a rebounding domestic economy and a growing international business.
Demaplast was one of five Mexican companies sharing an exhibit at NPE. The group was sponsored by Bancomext, the Mexican government's export promotion agency, and Anipac, the plastics industry association in Mexico.
Bancomext also was showing its Subcontracting Promotion System at NPE, held June 16-20. The agency uses SPS to link U.S., Canadian and other foreign manufacturers with Mexican plastics processors. The system includes a detailed profile of the Mexican companies, most of them located in Mexico City, Monterrey and Guadalajara.
Bancomext independently verifies the information in processor profiles, usually with industry consultants, to help prospective business partners choose a Mexican partner, said Juan Carlos Agoitia, export promotion manager for chemical, plastic and leather products.
The plastics industry was the first to go on SPS when Bancomext started it eight months ago. The agency now is preparing to add metalworking and garment industries to the system, Agoitia said. Companies in the United States and Canada can make use of SPS by calling Bancomext offices in Toronto, Chicago, Los Angeles and Dallas.
Demaplast put up a Web site about a month before exhibiting its blow molding machinery at NPE.The company's Internet address is www.petbottle.com.
