CertainTeed Corp. has added another window fabricator to its stable of building products assets.
Valley Forge, Pa.-based CertainTeed, owned by Cie. de St. Gobain of Courbevoie, France, announced July 14 it had purchased the assets of Horizon Windows Inc. of Elizabethtown, Ky., for an undisclosed amount.
The 50-employee Elizabethtown facility now will operate as CertainTeed Windows Mid-South Fabrication Center, and will serve portions of Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, West Virginia and southern Ohio.
Horizon Windows is at least the third fabricator CertainTeed has absorbed since embarking on the fabrication side of the business in 1996. CertainTeed first stepped into window fabrication in April 1996 when it formed a joint venture with Insulate Industries Inc. of Auburn, Wash., a PVC window extruder and fabricator.
CertainTeed later bought B&K Window Manufacturing Inc. of Woodinville, Wash., in August and Fashonwall Products Co. Inc. of Wixom, Mich., in November. Both companies also were licensed CertainTeed fabricators.
But the buying spree does not represent an effort to broaden fabrication abilities beyond a few regional outlets, CertainTeed spokesman William Seiberlich said.
``We've made some selective acquisitions of fabricators,'' Seiberlich said in a telephone interview. ``We thought we could service select customers better this way.''
CertainTeed has no plans for additional expansions in the fabrication field at this time, Seiberlich said.
CertainTeed — which ranked as North America's largest extruder in Plastics News' 1997 pipe, profile and tubing survey — makes vinyl siding, window and fence profiles as well as ceiling, insulation, roofing, ventilation and fiberglass products. The company reported $432 million in extrusion sales for 1996.
