WASHINGTON — Beginning Jan. 1, new imported injection molding machines coming into the United States had to list a new 10-digit Harmonized Tariff System number.
In the past, injection presses for processing thermoplastics have used a si x-digit HTS number. The new digits, tacked on to the end, are designed to specify the clamp tonnage of each machine, in metric tons.
Machinery company executives think the new, more-specific num ber will help improve the accuracy of impo rt data.
Presses are broken down into four metric-ton categories:
8477109030 for clamping forc es of less than 50 metric tons.
8477109040 for clamping forc es of 50-299 tons.
8477109050 for clamping forc es of 300-749 tons.
8477109060 for clamping forces of 750 tons and more.
The Washington-based Society of the Plastics Industry Inc. re leased the numbers.
