Bayer's new polymers suited for composting
Bayer Corp. introduced compostable, biodegradable polymers based on synthetic polyester amide.
BAK 1095 is suited to film, extruded parts and blow molding and can be processed on conventional machinery, according to the Pittsburgh-based firm. The product is semicrystalline, mainly transparent and has low-temperature properties. Bayer cited potential uses in food, horticulture and agriculture, where soiled plastics can be added to compostable waste. BAK 2195 is the injection molding grade.
Bayer said the polymer can accept high loadings of filler, such as calcium carbonate or sawdust.
The polymer is fully biodegradable under composting conditions in short periods of time but not in landfill or sealed conditions.

Erema introduces PE recycling system
Erema Engineering Recycling Maschinen und Anlagen GmbH of Ansfelden/Linz, Austria, has introduced the RGA 50T, a system for recycling limited amounts of polyethylene scrap from 176-220 pounds per hour.
The system is built around Erema's tangentially configured cutter-densifier-extruder combination. It continuously chops, mixes, heats, dries and feeds material into a tangential extruder where it is melted and homogenized.
The RGA 50T extruder includes bimetal cylinders and armored screws. It can be ordered in vented or nonvented configurations. New pelletizing equipment and a new melt filter have been designed specifically for the throughputs of the machine.
Depending on the equipment, complete systems for PE recycling cost $73,000-$100,000.

Alliance Gas Systems tout gas controllers
Gas-assisted molding equipment supplier Alliance Gas Systems Inc. has introduced its LGC-1 gas controller modules and PID-60 intensification modules.
The Detroit-based company's hardware systems separate the functions of the controller and the intensification functions, which reduces floor space and the cost for multiple system installations.
