Van Dorn upgrades Pathfinder controller
Van Dorn Demag Corp. said an improvement, called Optimizer, to its new Pathfinder 3000 and 5000 controller helps the controller learn the specifics of each injection molding machine and mold.
Pathfinder 3000 and 5000 replace the Pathfinder 2500 and 4500 controllers.
Pathfinder units now include an Auto-Calibrate function, which automatically sets the operational range of proportional valves. That task had been done manually. Auto-Calibrate also determines the digital feed forward value of the controller.
Strongsville, Ohio-based Van Dorn Demag recommends molders run the Auto-Calibrate function once a year, to adjust for changes in the hydraulics of the injection press.
The controllers also include Adaptive Process Control, which uses three control loops to fine-tune the controller.

SolveTech's gauge measures film on line
The BF100 noncontact blown film gauge measures film on line, after the lay-flat process and before the roller, according to SolveTech Inc. of Wilmington, Del.
The unit measures near the edge of the folded-over film, then halves the result and displays the thickness of a single layer.
For rotating or oscillating webs, the gauge gives average, maximum and minimum measurements.
Base price is $13,500.

Battenfeld unveils Airmould Contour
Battenfeld of America Inc. has improved its gas-assisted injection molding technology by introducing Airmould Contour.
The gas targets one side between the melted plastic and the mold-cavity surface. This cushion of gas applies hold pressure to the melt, controlling sink and other shrinkage deformations.
Battenfeld developed Airmould Contour for parts that require a smooth or high-gloss surface on one side with different wall thicknesses or complex geometry and ribs on the other side. Examples include covers, panels and housings.
The technology also is good for caps and closures that have areas of thick walls and ribs, said the West Warwick, R.I., company.
