LOS ANGELES — Charles L. Hamermesh, 72, technical director of the Society for the Advancement of Material and Process Engineering since 1990 and SAMPE Journal editor, died March 25 in Los Angeles.
The Covina, Calif.-based society has selected Hamermesh as a SAMPE Fellow and will recognize his 39 years in the industry at its May 31-June 2 conference in Anaheim, Calif.
In one of his duties, he directed a joint SAMPE-California Department of Transportation program on the use of fiber-reinforced plastics for seismic retrofit and rehabilitation of structures. The program was evaluating composite materials and processes.
From 1959-85, he was with Rockwell International Corp. and predecessor firms, most recently as group leader and manager of polymer synthesis and processing.
He held 15 patents on foam technology and processing, wrote numerous technical publications and conducted seminars, clinics and short courses. He was born in New York.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth, of Sherman Oaks, Calif.; five children; and eight grandchildren.
