After a fire claimed Plastics Technologies Co. of Monroe, Ga., on Thanksgiving Day 1997, 55 employees were left without jobs.
Two months after the fire, several former PTC employees brainstormed a new mold-making company. In January 1998, 20 of the 55 PTC employees founded Versatile Mold & Design Co.
Versatile Mold & Design builds and designs molds for thermoforming and injection, compression, and transfer compression molding. Vice President Frank Mauriello said the new company is very upbeat.
``Everyone here is very motivated to make things work.''
The firm is housed in a leased, 31,000-square-foot facility. Versatile Mold & Design owns five grinders, two milling machines and three injection presses.
Mauriello said Versatile Mold & Design won PTC's customers along with gathering some of its own. He said the firm will be hiring more employees within the year and possibly expanding the facility.
Monroe fire officials now believe the cause of the PTC fire was an electrical short.
