Three firms forming marketing alliance
Bekum America Corp.'s alliance with two Ohio companies is working to commercialize round blow molded bottles for the personal-care market using in-mold labeling.
Bekum of Williamston, Mich., Autotec Inc. of Sylvania, Ohio, and Multi-Color Corp. of Cincinnati, have formed a joint marketing alliance to develop in-mold labeling technology in polyethylene bottles blow molded on shuttle machines. The companies have focused on oval bottles, handleware and round bottles.
In response to growing demand for in-mold labeling, Bekum plans to introduce larger, more-flexible shuttle machines to use the technology.
Multi-Color hosted a seminar on the process May 12-13 in Cincinnati.

Harrel has extruder for 2-polymer tubes
Harrel Inc. of Norwalk, Conn., has introduced a machine that can extrude a tube made of one polymer at one end and another polymer at the other end, in a continuous process.
The machine is called the AP-600. AP stands for alternate polymer.
Servo-driven precision melt pumps transfer from one polymer to the other. The melt pump acts as a positive shut-off device — when the pump stops, the flow of polymer stops immediately. A special Tubetrol controller keeps the sum of the two pump speeds constant as one speeds up and the other slows down.

Temptrol introduces water control unit
Capitol Temptrol Inc. of Centerbrook, Conn., said its Temptrol Master is compact, rugged and economical.
The unit maintains precision control over a temperature range of 50°-250° F through the use of dual electric immersion heaters, and an external cold water supply.
Removable side panels allow easy access to heater thermocouples or solenoids for replacement. Access to the main electrical parts is through a hinged top. The units are stackable.
Temptrol Master comes in a range of sizes from a one-half horsepower pump with 6 kilowatt heaters, a three-quarters horsepower pump with 9 kilowatt heaters and a 1 horsepower pump with 12 kilowatt heaters.
Prices start at $1,395.

Pizza bag warmer is made of PC blend
Co-Mack Technology Inc. and Phase Change Laboratories Inc., both of Vista, have collaborated to produce a pizza delivery bag warmer called the Energy Pak.
Co-Mack, an injection molder, designed a shell, made from a polycarbonate resin blend, the size of a large pizza. The shell can withstand the heat of a low-temperature oven or microwave.
The shell holds a plate made of a silica-based substance, called Phase Change Material, which maintains a constant heat of between 100° and 180° F. The material was created by Phase Change Laboratories.
``Our biggest challenge was finding a functional design that would safely surround the [Phase Change Material], yet not interfere with its heating abilities,'' said Joe McRoskey, chief executive of Co-Mack. Co-Mack has produced more than 100,000 units of the Energy Pak, which have been purchased and implemented by a major fast food delivery chain. The firm currently is securing sales with two other chains.
According to Plastics News' 1998 survey of North American injection molders, the firm had sales of $9.2 million in 1997.

Accrapak Inc. exhibits pelletizer in Cleveland
Accrapak Inc. exhibited its new compact strand pelletizer, Model 750-4, at Plastics Fair Cleveland, June 23-25.
The Houston firm said the pelletizer can run up to 1,200 pounds an hour of material. Features include a lubricant-free gear drive system to the rotor and feed rolls. The upper feed roll pivots away so operators easily can clean the cutting chamber. The feed rolls also are easy to remove.
Accrapak said the pelletizer is well-suited for making color masterbatches.
