Nearly a year after establishing its North American facility, Bericap Group has taken more steps toward becoming a global producer of plastic closures by opening a Chinese plant and building another in Brazil.
The 40,000-square-foot Bericap (Kunshan) Co. Ltd. plant is in Jiangsu, China. During the start-up phase, the company will operate six injection presses and employ 25-30 to mold polypropylene and polyethylene closures.
The company expects the Chinese operation to have sales of $5.76 million in its first year. A plant expansion already is in the works, said Scott Ambrose, president and chief operating officer of Bericap North America. The expansion will add presses and space based on the firm's success.
Bericap also is constructing a plant in SÃo Paulo, Brazil, to be completed late this year or in early 1999.
``We're going in with the automotive market and following major oil companies,'' Ambrose said in a telephone interview. ``The market is developing so quickly and we'll also serve the beverage and edible oil industries.''
Like the Chinese plant, this facility will be 40,000 square feet, employ 25-30 and run six presses.
In addition, the company is considering expanding operations into Moscow within two to three years. Bericap opened a sales office there earlier this year.
Bericap Group is headquartered in Dijon, France, and operates 12 manufacturing facilities in 10 countries. The company makes specialty closures, such as tamper-evident and child-resistant types, and closures with pour features for food, beverage, automotive, chemical and pharmaceutical markets. Its North American headquarters, a joint venture with Twinpak Inc., is in Burlington, Ontario.
Bericap had sales of $193 million last year.
