Building products manufacturer Epwin Group plc paid £4.5 million ($7.3 million) to acquire PVC building products extruder Bendex Plastics Ltd.
Bendex of Warrington, England, extrudes cable ducting and plastic window profiles and employs about 20 at its plant at nearby Irlam.
The firm will operate as an autonomous unit and retain its present management, according to Torquay, England-based Epwin.
Epwin Group already has 26 other firms, mostly producing exterior building products including plastic profiles and doors.
The deal follows Epwin's strategy of expanding into related product areas. In May the group acquired PVC window profile extruder Kwest Corp. Ltd. of Paignton, England, for $2.44 million.
Epwin plans to restructure that business and reduce the single plant's 160-strong work force by an undetermined number.
Epwin employs 1,500. Its 1997 sales were up 25 percent to almost $147 million. Pretax profit rose nearly 16 percent to $9.94 million.
