Injection molder Co-Mack Technology Inc. and San Diego-based Cozza Harris Design LLC, an architectural and product-design firm, have invented a four-caster wheel unit for moving fully loaded shelving fixtures in retail establishments.
The Universal Gondola Skate, which slides underneath shelving units, can move as much as 2,000 pounds per wheel. The unit is made of glass-loaded polypropylene using structural foam molding.
On average, the skate can be installed on a 30-foot-long shelving unit in about 15 minutes. For a 20,000-square-foot store, that means 26-30 hours of installation time, compared with the 55-80 hours required when using some metal-caster products, the company said in a news release.
The Gondola Skate consists of a thick wall for heavy loads; a support lip for a toe kick to fit behind for lateral support; and an octagonal slot for the leveling foot of the shelving unit.
