STRONGSVILLE, OHIO — Donald L. Smith, who held management positions at machinery makers Van Dorn Demag Corp., Engel Machinery Inc. and Cincinnati Milacron Inc., died Aug. 26 after a bout with cancer. He was 53.
Smith's most recent post was international sales manager at Van Dorn Demag in Strongsville.
The funeral was Aug. 29 in Springfield, Tenn. In Northern Ohio, a memorial service will be held Sept. 10 at the United Methodist Church in Westlake.
Van Dorn Demag hired Smith in 1994, shortly after Mannesmann Demag AG bought Van Dorn. Smith coordinated international efforts between the two companies.
``Van Dorn had no international program of any substance prior to that,'' said Sid Rains, vice president of sales.
Smith chaired the finance committee for 1997 NPE, and for the upcoming NPE in 2000.
Rains said Smith maintained close contact with colleagues at Engel and Milacron. His longest plastics machinery stint was at Milacron in Batavia, Ohio, from 1979-91.
At Milacron, Smith was hired to fill George Yarnell's post as head of purchasing for plastics machinery, when Yarnell moved to the manufacturing side. Smith rose through the ranks to become operations manager from 1990-91.
``[Smith was] just a very gentle, down-to-earth type of individual that was a gentleman's gentleman,'' Yarnell said. ``He was just the type of guy that you enjoyed being around.''
Smith moved on to Engel in York, Pa., as general manager, before going to Van Dorn Demag.
