DSM boosting COPE at Netherlands site
EMMEN, NETHERLANDS — DSM Engineering Plastics will expand its Emmen site's capacity for polyester-based thermoplastic elastomers by 30 percent in early 1999.
Markets for polyester-based TPEs — better known as copolyester elastomers or COPEs — are growing 6-7 percent annually, DSM officials said.
DSM's own growth in COPEs has been about 15 percent in recent years because of the company's focus on automotive, construction and consumer disposables and durables, according to Roeland Polet, DSM's global business manager for Arnitel-brand COPEs.
Annual North American COPE demand is estimated to reach 87 million pounds this year and could reach 105 million pounds by 2001, according to industry sources. COPEs currently make up less than 10 percent of the overall North American TPE market.
Typical COPE end uses include automotive and industrial hydraulic tubing, hoses, gaskets and bellows.
DSM began importing its COPEs to North America four years ago. The Sitaard, Netherlands-based company, with North American headquarters in Evansville, Ind., ranks second to DuPont of Wilmington, Del., in global COPE production.
Frnch press maker sets up Ohio office
TIFFIN, OHIO — A French compression molding equipment producer has set up a North American sales office.
Pinette Emidecau Industries Inc. started up in Tiffin, Ohio, on Sept. 1, according to Wayne Foster, sales manager for the company. It offers presses from 10-3,200 tons for sheet molding compound, plastic felts, ethylene propylene diene monomer and other materials.
Much of Pinette's machinery is used for auto parts such as body and door panels, headliners, trunk liners and acoustical panels. The U.S. operation is a subsidiary of Pinette Emidecau of Chalon-sur-Saone, France. Foster said the French firm ``dabbled in North American'' markets and has undisclosed customers here but it wants to make a more concerted effort to boost sales.
