Eckart brightens up aluminum pigments
Eckart America LP introduced two lines of aluminum pigments with improved brightness and ability to reduce flow lines in injection molded parts.
Mastersafe pellets are up to 90 percent aluminum concentrates with particle sizes of 60-330 microns. These materials have a narrower particle-size distribution for much brighter shades.
Mastercolor colored aluminum pigments are available in gold, blue and green and are made from Food and Drug Administration-approved materials. They provide high-heat stability and light-fastness and allow new styling options, especially in dark shades, according to the Painesville, Ohio, company.

Hearing protector gets TPE enhancing
A thermoplastic elastomer from GLS Corp. is featured in an award-winning industrial hearing protector.
The Jazz Band hearing protector from Moldex-Metric Inc. of Culver City, Calif., features a fluorescent-green GLS Versaflex TPE alloy overmolded onto a pearlized blue polycarbonate base. The TPE provides enhanced aesthetics and improved noise and vibration damping, claimed Cary, Ill.-based GLS.
The Jazz Band received a 1998 Industrial Design Excellence Award sponsored by Business Week magazine and recognition from the Society of Plastics Engineers' Product Design & Development Division.

New Eastman resin offers more clarity
Eastman Chemical Co.'s new copolyester has greater clarity than its predecessor Eastar K2000, claimed the Kingsport, Tenn., firm.
Eastar K3000 gives cleaner-looking edges in applications such as refrigerator bins. It also gives improved cycle time and lower scrap rates. Eastman claimed the resin has broader regulatory compliance, including requirements of the European Directive.

Multibase TPEs offset air-bag costs
Multibase Inc. introduced TPE mar-resistant materials that provide in-mold color for auto airbag covers.
The new thermoplastic elastomers eliminate the need for painting and provide scratch and mar resistance comparable to soft-touch paints currently used. The Copley, Ohio, firm has the elastomers in high and normal flow versions and in a range of custom colors.
Multibase said TPE MR materials are available in hardnesses of Shore A 55 to Shore D 40 and various flexural moduli. When processed in injection presses with good temperature and pressure control, the materials can save as much as $3 per air-bag cover, the firm claimed.

Cyro sheet advances abrasion resistance
Cyro Industries developed abrasion-resistant acrylic sheet for glazing, signs and other applications.
Acrylite AR uses 3M Co.'s 906 Abrasion Resistant Coating to provide abrasion resistance on one or both sides of the sheet. The Rockaway, N.J., firm claims the new sheet has 40 times the abrasion resistance of uncoated sheet. It maintains high optical clarity and stands up to most glass cleaners.
Cyro said sample kits are available to demonstrate the sheet's properties.
