IBEC paper explains long-fiber process
DETROIT — A new glass-fiber injection process that holds promise for a variety of applications is the subject of a technical paper to be presented at IBEC '98, the International Body and Engineering Conference & Exposition, set for Sept. 29-Oct. 1 in Detroit.
The traditional production of low-density structural reaction injection molding involves placing glass-fiber mat into a mold before liquid resin is injected. In the new process, known as long-fiber injection, the fibers are injected along with the resin mixture onto the production mold. When the part is removed, the glass mat is encapsulated by the resin, forming a structural composite.
The paper, titled ``Evolution to LD-SRIM: Recent Advances to Meet the Market Demands,'' was authored by Andreas Rothacker, senior development specialist, and Anthony Cleveland, automotive business development manager for ICI Polyurethanes.
Though used prominently in door panels, ICI said in a news release, the technology can be applied to package trays, spare-tire covers, headliners and sun visors. The LFI process was studied at ICI's technical center in Sterling Heights, Mich., using equipment from Krauss-Maffei AG.
