CHICAGO — D-M-E Co. has introduced its Galaxy hot-runner system, which is designed to optimize performance in multicavity molding applications.
Officials at D-M-E, a Madison Heights, Mich.-based division of Milacron Inc., say the Galaxy system features fast cycle times, quick color changes, close center-to-center distances, modular components and low gate vestiges.
``This our first 32-cavity mold system,'' D-M-E's Frederick Steil said in an interview at Plastics USA, held Oct. 6-8 in Chicago. ``It's a brand-new, fresh approach for us.''
Steil, D-M-E's mechanical engineering and technical services manager, added the Galaxy will work with any program based on commodity materials and multicavity molds.
The unit's close-to-center dimensions yield more parts per cycle, making it ideal for such applications as caps and closures, cosmetic packaging, cutlery, and small medical, electronic and automotive parts, D-M-E officials said.
The new system also will allow molds to become more compact by reducing die heights and allowing mold makers to work with smaller plates if necessary, Steil said.
The Galaxy's nozzles feature quick-change modular assemblies for reduced service time. The nozzles offer a choice of tips, including standard, wear-resistant and through-hole. A modular nozzle construction enables a wide range of nozzle lengths to suit a variety of mold stack heights.
Other D-M-E products launched at the show included sintered air vents and new sizes of standard core pins.
The vents are designed to relieve trapped gas in molds and dies, minimize the number of short-shot and burned parts, and reduce overall injection molding cycle time. The vents are available in 49 different sizes ranging from 4 millimeters to 28mm in outside diameter.
The 21 new sizes are in both standard-hardness and high-hardness core pins. Each core pin is made from hot-work steel and is designed for easy machining. Each pin also is treated with a specialized finish to minimize wear and prolong pin life.
