Plastics industry information majors Tarnell Co. and Phillip Townsend Associates Inc. plan to merge by the end of the year.
The new company will offer new services, software and programs, the firms announced in an Oct. 12 news release. It also will expand coverage in Latin America's plastics industry.
Tarnell provides sales, marketing and credit information to ``legitimate suppliers'' of plastic materials, equipment and services, said President Stephen Tarnell. Its Tips processor database tracks materials consumption and production, plant capacity, processes, equipment and personnel.
Tarnell also offers financial, performance and credit data on all plastics consumers, publishes a biweekly newsletter and provides decision support software.
Townsend focuses on the global plastic and chemical industries. It provides single- and multiple-client market research, management consulting, databases and management support services. One of its programs is bench-marking analysis for plastic resin producers. Another measures customer satisfaction, brand recognition and competitors' strengths and weaknesses. It publishes reports on resin producers' market shares and North American resin price and inventory data. It also has a database detailing resin consumption in North and South America, Europe and Asia.
Tarnell is based in Providence, R.I. Townsend has its headquarters in Houston, with offices in New Jersey, London, China, Japan and South Africa.
Stephen Tarnell said the two companies complement each other since his firm focuses on detailed manufacturing data while Townsend is materials-oriented and a major consultant.
Stephen Tarnell and Thomas Galvanek, Townsend general manager, both stressed that the new company will continue to honor confidentiality in data gathering and dissemination. They predict the new firm will be the biggest of its kind in the world, although they did not project sales. It will employ more than 150.
Phillip Townsend, president of the Houston company, will be chief executive officer of the merged firm. Tarnell Executive Vice President Andrew Tarnell will be its chief financial officer.
In other news, Tarnell Co. beefed up its presence in the plastics machinery sector by opening its first satellite office in Akron, Ohio, where Carolyn Reed-Dickson was named market sales manager for plastic processing equipment.
