CHICAGO — Cognex Corp. introduced the SmartView Modular Camera Network at Plastics USA, held in Chicago.
The firm claims the camera is the world's first modular, automated surface-inspection system for detecting, measuring and classifying defects on products made in a continuous process.
``Early detection of surface defects is critical in the manufacturing of web-based products such as paper, plastics, metals and nonwovens,'' said Glenn Wienkoop, president of Cognex Surface Inspection Systems Division.
The system has one or more intelligent cameras with inspection algorithms and a drag-and-drop Windows NT-based interface. The SmartView MCN costs $50,000-$100,000 and allows users to add cameras without modifying hardware.
Cognex, based in Natick, Mass., has shipped 75,000 machines. Cognex's Surface Inspection Systems Division is headquartered in Alameda, Calif.
