Minco Group is expanding its custom injection molding reach by opening a plant in Clay City, Ky.
The Dayton, Ohio, company's All Service Plastic Molding Inc. business will set up 10 presses, with clamping forces of 50-500, in a leased, 30,000-square-foot plant about 30 miles southeast of Lexington, Ky. ASPM will seek ISO 9002 registration for the facility as soon as possible.
Minco also said ASPM is forming an alliance with metal and plastics processor CMS Hartzell. ASPM is a molding specialist and CMS Hartzell does metal fabricating and stamping, die casting, electro-mechanical assembly and injection molding. The firms hope the alliance will capitalize on their strengths in serving a similar customer base in office and business equipment markets.
The firm will relocate presses from ASPM's Dayton plant to Clay City, Gary Deaton, Minco manager of marketing and manufacturing, said in a telephone interview. It is renovating the Clay City facility and plans to begin operations there in January.
The Dayton plant will have 28 presses with clamping forces ranging to 950 tons after Clay City opens. ASPM's overall employment will remain at about 160, Deaton estimated.
ASPM has been a custom molder since 1982. Its markets include business equipment, automotive and consumer products. It is a sister company to Minco Tool & Mold Inc., also of Dayton. ASPM had sales of $19.9 million last year.
Deaton said many ASPM customers want sheet-metal capabilities and the ASPM-CMS Hartzell alliance will allow a seamless supply of plastic and metal assemblies. ASPM has supplied molded parts to Continental Metal Specialties Inc., which recently merged with Hartzell Manufacturing Co. Inc. to create CMS Hartzell. CMS Hartzell has 10 plants in North America, including three in Kentucky.
The ASPM-CMS Hartzell alliance will reduce costs, increase speed of products to market and lower shipping and handling costs, according to Kevin Hartnett, CMS Hartzell vice president of sales and marketing. The alliance will offer services ranging from design and tool building to molding and assembly.
