WASHINGTON — Plastic packing tape has become the top banana in a developing trade spat between the United States and the European Union.
The U.S. government is poised to raise 100 percent tariffs on some plastic tape and other film products from the EU, the latest retaliation in an ongoing trade dispute over European banana imports.
The tariff applies to polypropylene plates, sheet and films, which the U.S. targeted to punish only those countries it considers engaged in unfair trade practices.
U.S. plastics industry officials said the $88 million tariff increase is unlikely to have a big impact.
