PITTSBURGH — PPG Industries Inc. will close its research center in O'Hara Township, near State College, Pa.
The move comes as part of a plan to merge PPG's fiberglass research, technical services and engineering functions into a single unit.
Charles Smith, former director of fiberglass research, has been named director of the new fiberglass science and technology unit, and will be based at the company's Pittsburgh headquarters.
The move means the relocation of 56 fiberglass scientists, engineers and technicians to facilities in North Carolina and the Pittsburgh area, the company said.
PPG is a major producer of continuous-strand fiberglass, used in reinforced plastics, electronic circuit boards and other applications.
Vice President Kevin Sullivan said economics was the main force behind the changes.
``Strong downward pricing pressure from Asian imports is rapidly changing today's competitive environment,'' he said.
