MINNEAPOLIS — Production has started at a 46,000-square-foot addition to Solar Plastics Inc.'s Davenport, Iowa, plant, with two new Ferry rotational molding machines.
The expansion brings the total size of the plant to 106,000 square feet, Solar President Chuck Carlsen said. With the two Ferry rotomolding machines, the Iowa factory now has nine.
``Beyond the new machines that we're adding, we'll have space for at least four additional machines,'' Carlsen said.
Solar also added several five-axis routers to trim the parts, he said.
Solar operates rotomolding factories at its Minneapolis headquarters; in Davenport and Sioux City, Iowa; and at Delano, Minn.
Carlsen declined to say how much Solar is investing in the Davenport expansion.
Because of the expansion, the plant has added about 30 employees, bringing its total work force to 85, Carlsen said.
