Vinyl flooring maker Tarkett Inc. ceased operations Friday at its Whitehall, Pa., plant and announced plans to consolidate with sister firm Domco Inc. of Farnham, Quebec.
Parent firm Tarkett Sommer AG of Frankenthal, Germany, merged the plants in an effort to save money. About 230 workers will lose their jobs at the Pennsylvania plant when operations move to Canada.
Tarkett's administrative offices will remain at the Whitehall site, which also is its North American headquarters.
A two-year feasibility study conducted by Tarkett Sommer led the company to pursue greater efficiency in its global operations. Several plants in Europe were closed as a result.
Tarkett Sommer now has 30 manufacturing sites in 13 countries, including three Domco plants in North America.
Tarkett officials could not be reached for comment.
