As the vice president for plastics sales for Houston-based ChemConnect Inc., George Avdey is responsible for creating liquidity for plastics trading on the World Chemical Exchange. He has 26 years of plastics experience in general management, sales, marketing, new business development and manufacturing management with polymer producers such Chevron Chemical, GE Plastics and Borg-Warner Chemicals.
Prior to joining ChemConnect, Avdey served as the general sales manager for Chevron's North American polyethylene business. He joined Chevron in 1990 as general manager of its styrenic polymers business. While there his team implemented turnaround strategies that resulted in a substantial sales growth, expanded capacity and a return to profitability.
He spent two years with GE Plastics as product manager for Lexan-brand polycarbonate automotive resins. Avdey served 16 years with Borg-Warner Chemicals, where he had increasingly challenging assignments in manufacturing management for Cycolac-brand ABS resins and marketing management for Prevex-brand resins, as well as in new business development and sales management.
Avdey holds a bachelor of science degree in chemical engineering from the University of Pittsburgh and has completed several advanced management programs in marketing, sales, new business development and quality.
