DUBLIN, PA. — American Innovations Inc. of Dublin has introduced the first commercially available engineered polymer and thermoplastic elastomer-based walker for the health-care industry. Available in four colors, the AmbulMate-brand walker is a functional but sleeker alternative to the traditional metal walker, the design of which has remained largely unchanged for the past 30 years, American Innovations said.
With the intention of developing a walker less "institutional" than the traditional aluminum-and-steel style, American Innovations took the AmbulMate from concept to its current form incorporating ergonomics, color and style, according to Karl J. Douglass, president and chief executive officer.
The AmbulMate's frame is injection molded from engineering-grade polypropylene, the company said.
Four contoured handgrips, two mesh carrying compartments, folding release mechanisms and shock-absorbing footpads are made of Advanced Elastomer Systems LP's Santoprene-brand thermoplastic rubber.
American Innovations credits Santoprene's flexibility for the incorporation of a variety of accessories for the user.
The walker, available in cobalt blue, champagne, teal or wineberry, can be fitted with an accessory caddy to transport beverage containers, eyeglasses and other such items, the company said.
