Michael Berins has sold his newsletter, Plastics Focus, to Market Search Inc. of Toledo, Ohio. Market Search President James Best said his firm will continue to publish the 32-year-old, twice-monthly newsletter.
"Our objective is to not change a thing," Best said.
Plastics Focus was founded in 1969 by Joel Frados, a former editor of Modern Plastics magazine. In 1985, Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, which published several plastics magazines, bought the newsletter. Frados continued as editor. In 1986, Berins and his company, Plastics Connection Inc. of Amherst, Mass., bought Plastics Focus. He wrote and edited the newsletter.
Before buying Plastics Focus, Berins, a chemical engineer, worked in the plastics industry for more than 20 years in blow molding research and development and in product development and marketing of plastic packaging.
Berins said he wants to travel and enjoy a break from deadline pressure before deciding what to do next.
Terms for the deal were not disclosed.
In another recent deal, Market Search bought Transportation Composites Newsletter from Scientific American Newsletters LLC of New York, which covers composites used in vehicles such as cars, trucks, buses and trains. Best said the newsletter will be incorporated into the Reinforced Plastics edition of his company's plasticsBrief newsletter.
The plasticsBrief newsletters, founded by Market Search in 1972, come in four other editions, covering processing, design and materials, marketing and global news.
In past years, Market Search has bought three other newsletters — Plastics Business News, Techpak and Plastics Week. The firm also publishes a newsletter and an annual, multiclient study about automotive plastics.
