CHENNAI, INDIA — A new joint venture between an Internet provider and an electronic-commerce company plans to open a Web site for the plastics industry in India. The site, to be launched in May, will offer sourcing information worldwide and a trading network for parts and excess stock within India.
The portal is a joint venture between Satyam Infoway Ltd., an Internet service provider based in Chennai, and Singapore-based Plasticscommerce.com Pte. Ltd., a plastics industry Web site developer.
Customers will access the site through Satyam's Web platform, www.seekandsource.com, which features company profiles and products.
The Singapore firm's site, www.plasticscommerce.com, can be accessed from Satyam's portal.
The companies claim the venture is the first vertical site offering both Indian content and a window to international trading, according to a March 23 news release.
The venture is targeting a database of 6,000 companies, and seeks to create similar portals in China and Taiwan, according to published reports.
Satyam, publicly traded over Nasdaq, owns 53 percent of the joint venture.
