VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA — Brian Read, president of Horizon Plastics Co. Ltd. of Cobourg, Ontario, will continue as chairman of the SPI Structural Plastics Division for a two-year term beginning June 1. Read became division chairman last year, filling the vacancy created when Bayer Corp.'s Harry George reluctantly stepped down. George, though still active in the division, had to relinquish his officer's role after Bayer pulled out of SPI in favor of membership in the rival American Plastics Council. A non-member cannot serve as an SPI division officer.
Also at the division's recent meeting in Vancouver, J. Stephen Trapp, vice president of marketing with GI Plastek Inc. in Westlake, Ohio, was named division vice chairman.
Members at large on the executive committee will include Thomas Betts of Battenfeld of America Inc., West Warwick, R.I.; Robb Robertson of DeKalb Molded Products Co., Butler, Ind.; David Shallenberg of FM Corp., Rogers, Ark.; and Donald Wisch of Delta Mold Inc., Charlotte, N.C.
Allen Weidman has added the Structural Plastics Division to his duties as an SPI executive director. Karen Miles was named as coordinator for the division's conference and meetings. The Vancouver event was their first experience with the division.
The Structural Plastics Division, which has 55 member companies, scheduled its 2001 conference for April 1-3 at the Waverly Renaissance Hotel in Atlanta.
